This is a true off grid system with them building the house from the ground up to be super efficient, with passive solar design, Straw bale insulation, and a small wood stove for heat. They are still connected to the grid but only use it like a backup generator when there’s a shortage of power. In the over 5 years they’ve only used 800 kilowatts which is phenomenal considering the average person uses over twelve thousand a year. An over an hour long documentary is available about this home.
